Restorative Justice
Restorative Justice Programs in Minnesota
An educational overview of restorative justice principles and how they are practiced in Minnesota communities.
What Restorative Justice Means
Restorative justice is an approach that responds to harm by focusing on the needs of those affected, the responsibilities of the person who caused harm, and the role of the broader community. Instead of asking only what rule was broken and what punishment is owed, restorative practices ask who was harmed, what they need, and whose obligation it is to address the harm.

How Restorative Practices Work
Community Conferencing
A facilitated meeting that brings together those affected by an incident, the person responsible, and supporters to discuss what happened, the impact, and what is needed to repair the harm.
Victim-Offender Dialogue
A structured, voluntary process in which a person harmed and the person responsible meet, with a trained facilitator, to share their experiences and reach understanding or agreements.
Accountability Circles
Circle processes use a structured format that gives each participant a chance to speak. They are used to address harm, build community, and develop plans for accountability and support.
Community Service
Service projects that respond to specific harm or contribute to the community can be part of a restorative agreement when they are meaningful and connected to the incident.
